Hydrogen fuel continues to receive attention from Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz is one of the companies in the auto industry that has managed to attract a great deal of attention to hydrogen fuel cells. The German automaker brought attention to these energy systems by taking its own hydrogen-powered vehicles on a world tour in 2011. Since then, the company has been a strong advocate of hydrogen fuel and its uses in transportation, with these interests being backed up by its parent company, Daimler.

Public transportation considered ideal field for fuel cells

In its continuing effort to make hydrogen fuel more of a staple in transportation, Mercedes-Benz has begun to focus its efforts around the realm of public transportation. Hydrogen-powered buses are quickly becoming one of ideal solution to the environmental and economic issues that are present in public transit. Mercedes-Benz has been a strong advocate for public transit in recent years, especially when the use of renewable energy is involved. This week, the automaker has announced the opening of a new hydrogen fuel station that will service such vehicles in the future.

The new hydrogen fuel station is located at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The station will help supply fuel to hydrogen-powered buses that operate around the campus. Mercedes-Benz has provided two of its Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid buses to operate on-campus and ferry students from one location to another. These buses are equipped with the same type of hydrogen fuel cells that were used by Mercedes-Benz in 2011 during its hydrogen-powered world tour.

Mercedes-Benz plans to launch new hydrogen-powered vehicles in 2015 and beyond

The hydrogen-powered buses from Mercedes-Benz have an operational range of approximately 186 miles. These are 50% more efficient than the previous generation of Citaro buses, according to Daimler. Mercedes-Benz has plans to launch a variety of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the coming years, hoping to release the first of its hydrogen-powered consumer vehicles in 2015.
