Hydrogen Fuel Funding

Agency provides $20 million in funding to ambitious research and development projects

The U.S. Department of Energy is showing more support for hydrogen fuel by awarding $20 million in funding to ten research and development projects focused on hydrogen production and deployment. The federal agency has been growing more fond of hydrogen and fuel cell technology in recent years, investing money in the development of a hydrogen infrastructure and seeking ways to reduce the costs of fuel cell energy systems. The agency had once considered fuel cells to be an impossible solution to an immediate energy problem, but this is no longer the case.

DOE funds projects aimed at making hydrogen as inexpensive as conventional gasoline

The funding provided by the Department of Energy is meant to help bring the cost of hydrogen fuel down to $4 per gallon gasoline equivalent. To this end, the agency has issued funding to organizations that have extensive experience in hydrogen production and deployment. Among these organizations are FuelCell Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the University of Hawaii at Honolulu, Sandia National Laboratories, and the University of Colorado, Boulder. These organizations will be responsible for developing innovative, highly efficient, and low cost hydrogen production technologies.

Projects focused on storage and deployment technology are supported by federal agency

The federal agency has also issued funding for research and development projects that are focused on the deployment and storage of hydrogen. These organizations will be using this funding to develop new hydrogen storage technologies and dispensing systems. These technologies will be vital to the formation of a comprehensive hydrogen fuel infrastructure and will go a long way in supporting the clean transportation endeavors of the U.S.

Organizations with significant experience with hydrogen and fuel cell technology chosen for funding

The organizations that have been chosen by the Department of Energy have extensive experience in fuel cell technology and hydrogen fuel. These organizations were chosen based on this experience and the innovative nature of their research and development projects. The Department of Energy is also funding various other hydrogen-based initiatives, many of which are focused specifically on the establishment of a working hydrogen infrastructure.
