Green Jobs

Report highlights growth of green jobs

The alternative energy industry in the U.S. is taking off and may be having some profound economic effects on the whole country. The U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics has released a new report concerning “green jobs.” These jobs are in the clean energy industry and can refer to anything from manufacture, maintenance, or office work, as long as it relates to solar, wind, hydrogen or other form of renewable power in some way. Green jobs are often considered as sustainable as the energy with which they are associated, making them plentiful and resilient even in a poor economy.

3.1 million green jobs in the US, report notes

According to the report, there were more than 3.1 million green jobs in the U.S. as of November 2011. The majority of these jobs were in the manufacturing sector, where wages are high and demand for new workers soaring. According to analysis of the report from the Economic Policy Institute, green jobs are becoming so popular because of their high level of accessibility to Americans. The alternative  energy industry has positions available to people of nearly every education and experience level.

Growth of alternative energy industry could help US economy

The abundance and growth of green jobs have positive implications for the U.S. economy, according to the report. Because many industries in the country are still suffering from the economic downturn of 2008, unemployment continues to be a serious problem that has prolonged the country’s financial woes. The growth of the clean energy industry is putting people back to work, delivering on a promise that some politicians have been eager to make recently.

Government bets on economic benefits of clean energy

Whether green jobs have the capability of bringing the U.S. back from the brink of financial disaster is impossible to say for certain. It is unlikely that the growth of a single industry will have such a profound economic impact. Nonetheless, the federal government has been ramping up its support for clean energy in recent months in the hope that the country will see at least some of the economic benefits associated with clean energy in the near future.
