India Ramps Up Green Hydrogen Production in Odisha to Power Clean Energy Future
July 15, 2025On July 12, 2025, officials from India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) sat down with the Government of Odisha to check in on how things are shaping up for the state’s large-scale green hydrogen and green ammonia production plans. At the center of the conversation was the Gopalpur Special Economic Zone, which is fast becoming a hotspot for clean energy. Big industry names like Sembcorp, Hygenco, and NTPC are leading the charge with some seriously ambitious projects.
Major Projects Set the Pace
What’s in the pipeline? A massive hydrogen plant poised to produce 720,000 metric tons per year, and a 1.1 million ton-per-annum (MTPA) ammonia facility that they hope to get up and running by 2028. On top of that, there are plans to bring hydrogen-powered public transport to the streets of Bhubaneswar. If all goes well, this could be a real game changer — not just for Odisha, but for the whole country.
Why Odisha?
It’s not just by chance that Odisha is becoming central to India’s hydrogen production story. The state has a lot going for it — an extensive coastline, great port infrastructure, and a solid industrial foundation. All of this provides a perfect launchpad for green hydrogen exports, fitting neatly into the broader vision laid out by the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched back in 2023.
Opportunities Ahead, Challenges Too
The collaboration is about more than just producing fuel — it’s about building up the entire hydrogen infrastructure. From dealing with water use in electrolysis, to figuring out how to fund these massive developments, there are still some hurdles to clear. But the big takeaway from the meeting? Momentum is building, and Odisha is right at the center of India’s clean energy future.
