Innovative smartphone battery charger can fully charge a phone in less than one minute

New technology can charge phones up to 200 times faster than normal charging speeds.

StoreDot is a startup based in Israel that has developed a unique technology that enables a specialized lithium-ion battery to rapidly charge. The company’s instant-charging battery, called the Flashbattery, can pull in enough power in one minute and store it to last for nearly a full day. According to the company, it is compatible with smartphones, tablets, laptops and wearables and includes a FlashCharger. This charger can juice up a smartphone within minutes or in even as little as 30 seconds, depending on the smartphone battery charger model used.

Each of the charging solutions has its positives and negatives.

Presently, the most practical of the StoreDot models, reported CNN Money, is the company’s 50-am charger. This model, called the x20 because it can charge a phone 20 times faster than today’s current charging tech, can power a smartphone to full capacity in roughly six minutes. However, it is equipped with a pocket-sized wall charger with a special connector that doesn’t match the universal Type-C connector, which most of the industry has migrated toward using.

The far more powerful x100, on the other hand, although providing far faster charging, is not as practical for today’s mobile devices as it would require phones to have holes drilled in the back to accommodate the technology. Furthermore, its charger is large and not something that people will want to carry around with them when they’re on the go.

Additionally, the charging solutions will make smartphones more expensive, which could be a deal-breaker for many consumers, who are not lacking smartphone options. That said, in spite of these setbacks StoreDot CEO Doron Myersdorf says that the company has generated a lot of interest from Smartphone companies and $66 million in funding, reported CNN Money.

StoreDot has a cheaper solution in the works, but it will still be a while until such low-cost smartphone battery charger technology exists.

Although a very innovative device, StoreDot’s power system may not be a practical solution for everyone seeking to charge their mobile device. Furthermore, it is not likely to appear on the market until 2017. Due to this fact, the more viable smartphone battery charger solution for the average mobile phone users continues to be the more affordable and available portable battery chargers. These types of power banks, such as the Mogix External Battery Charger, can conveniently accompany mobile users wherever they go, so they can charge their batteries, no matter where they happen to be.

That being said, as for the StoreDot smartphone battery charger, Mysersdorf believes that, by 2018, the cost of putting this technology in smartphones won’t be that far off from the cost of present batteries.
