Recycling technology in Istanbul feeds stray dogs and cats

People in Turkey’s largest city can feed stray animals by recycling plastic.

The recycling technology, created by Pugedon, has been designed to distribute a small portion of dry kibble and drinking water for one of the city’s numerous stray dogs or cats whenever a person deposits a plastic bottle in one of the company’s “Smart Recycling Boxes”.

Combined, there are an estimated 150,000 stray cats and dogs in Istanbul.

Due to the fact that there are so many of them, it is not uncommon to see animals wandering the streets. In fact, since the early 1900’s, Istanbul has been known for having one of the largest populations of roaming animals in the world. To deal with the problem, the Turkish government continues to gather up hundreds of strays and abandon them in forested regions outside of the city.

This has left many of the cities inhabitants, who love these furry creatures, heading out to these forested areas to feed these animals. Pugedon is hoping to alleviate some of this burden with its recycling technology. The vending machines encourage people to recycle and feed the strays. The way it works is a person inserts their empty plastic bottle in a slot near the top of the machine. Once deposited, a small amount of food is dispensed out the bottom into a designated food dish. Also, before recycling their bottle, people have the option of pouring the remaining water from their bottles into a slot in the machine, which is distributed to the water dish.

The recycling technology pays for itself.

The machines are good for the environment, helping to prevent litter. They also give people somewhere to put their trash, while at the same time providing hungry animals with food and water. In addition, the government does not have to provide any money for the project to work. The kibble that is dispensed from the machine is paid for by the money that is made from recycling the plastic that is collected from each machine. Therefore, as long as citizens keep the streets clean and take advantage of the recycling technology, the animals will receive food and water until, hopefully, they are adopted.
