Toyota continues push for hydrogen fuelToyota Hydrogen fuel vehicle

Like other automakers throughout the world, Japan’s Toyota has plans to launch a hydrogen-powered vehicle within the next few years. The company has taken a strong interest in hydrogen fuel cells, which can produce large quantities of electrical power without also producing any harmful emissions. Toyota believes that hydrogen fuel cells could help usher in a new generation of vehicles that are more environmentally friendly but  on par with current generation vehicles in terms of performance.

New Fuel Cell Vehicle debuts ahead of schedule

Toyota has revealed its Fuel Cell Vehicle concept ahead of the vehicle’s scheduled experience at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. The vehicle is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell developed by Toyota itself and this energy system provides the electricity that the vehicle needs to operate. Indeed, the fuel cell used in the concept vehicle is nearly twice as powerful as the old model Toyota had been using for previous iterations of its Fuel Cell Vehicle. The new vehicle is unlike other concepts that have been developed by the automaker in the past, however, as it is meant to go into full production in 2015.

Hydrogen fuel may be the future of the Prius

Toyota envisions its new Fuel Cell Vehicle as the next step in the continued evolution of its prestigious Prius brand. The Prius is often considered the pioneer of clean transportation due to its use of efficient yet powerful technology and other factors. With hydrogen fuel beginning to play a more significant role in transportation, it may be very likely for the Prius to become wholly reliant on fuel cells rather than lithium-ion batteries in the future.

Vehicle can travel over 300 miles on a single tank of fuel

Toyota claims that its Fuel Cell Vehicle will be able to travel over 300 miles on a single tank of hydrogen fuel. Refueling the vehicle will take approximately 3 minutes. Beyond the vehicle’s use of certain technology, it is very similar to the Prius+, with the only significant design changes having to do with the length and width of the vehicle itself as well as some aesthetic features.
