Report shows that wind energy is beginning to make progress in the UK

Alternative energy has been a strong interest in the United Kingdom recently. The country has been making strides in increasing the amount of its electricity that is generated through clean and sustainable methods. Wind energy, in particular, has seen a great deal of support from the UK government. According to a report from Bloomberg, wind energy is showing impressive gains throughout the country. So much so that wind energy is quickly becoming one of the country’s favored forms of alternative energy.

As interest in solar energy wanes, wind energy begins to fill the gaps

The UK has previously shown aggressive support for the solar energy industry. The country had introduced an ambitious feed-in tariff meant to promote the adoption of solar energy installations, but has recently made cuts to the endeavor for the sake of financial stability. Though the UK has not abandoned its pursuit of solar power, wind energy is beginning to fill the gaps left by the reduced solar feed-in tariff.

Wind energy systems grow by at least 50%

According to Bloomberg, the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change has reported that the energy produced through onshore and offshore wind energy systems has increased by an average of 50% in the past year. The electricity generated by onshore wind energy systems jumped by 51%, while offshore wind energy systems expanded by 51%. Overall, renewable energy accounted for 11.1% of the country’s electricity over the past year, up from 7.7% in 2010.

UK expected to attain energy goals through focus on wind power

The United Kingdom’s expansive wind energy installations generated enough energy to power approximately 6 million homes throughout the country in the first quarter of 2012. The UK plans to continue pursuing wind energy in the hopes of achieving its sustainability and emissions reduction goals. Scotland, in particular, has plans to receive 100% of its energy through renewable sources by 2020, a feat that may be accomplished through the use of wind energy systems.
