Green hydrogen production

Green hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar or wind, avoiding direct CO2 emissions from production.[6] In Tarragona, the plant will use electricity from dedicated photovoltaic installations operated under an off‑grid or autoconsumption scheme to power electrolyzers that produce hydrogen qualifying as renewable under EU rules.[1][6]

RFNBO hydrogen is a category defined in EU law for hydrogen and its derivatives produced entirely from renewable, non‑biological energy sources and meeting specific sustainability and emissions benchmarks so that it can count towards RED III renewable energy targets. Lhyfe’s four operational sites in France and Germany have obtained RFNBO certification, making the company Europe’s largest producer of RFNBO hydrogen from water electrolysis, and positioning it to supply Germany’s emerging RFNBO demand in industry and transport under the new framework agreement.
