Hydrogen‑based Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI)
Hydrogen‑based direct reduction of iron is a steelmaking process in which iron ore is reduced to solid metallic iron using hydrogen or a hydrogen‑rich gas instead of carbon‑intensive coke in a blast furnace, substantially lowering CO2 emissions.[6][8] Within the SALCOS program, Salzgitter is developing direct reduction plants, including the μDRAL pilot plant, to prove and then scale up this technology in an integrated steel mill environment.[6][8]
