Membrane-based hydrogen recovery uses selective polymer or composite membranes to separate hydrogen from mixed gas streams, such as off-gases from refineries, petrochemical plants, or other industrial processes, allowing hydrogen to be captured and reused rather than flared or vented.[1] Air Products Membrane Solutions designs and manufactures membrane modules that can concentrate hydrogen from these streams, providing industrial customers with an additional hydrogen source while reducing waste and emissions.[1]

Membrane nitrogen generation for aerospace applications uses gas separation membranes to produce nitrogen-enriched air used in aircraft fuel tank inerting systems and other safety-related applications where oxygen levels must be reduced to mitigate fire and explosion risks.[1] The Missouri expansion is described as supporting aerospace nitrogen, indicating production of membrane modules or systems tailored for aviation customers.[1]

Biogas upgrading membranes are gas separation systems that convert raw biogas from sources such as landfills, wastewater treatment plants, or agricultural digesters into biomethane by selectively removing carbon dioxide and other impurities, improving its energy content and enabling injection into natural gas grids or use as vehicle fuel.[1] Air Products indicates that its Missouri expansion will support membrane-based solutions for biogas and hydrogen recovery, placing biogas upgrading within the facility’s technology portfolio.[1]

A US$70 million expansion of Air Products’ Manufacturing and Logistics Center near St. Louis, Missouri, aimed at increasing capacity for membrane-based solutions serving biogas and hydrogen recovery, aerospace nitrogen, and cleaner marine fuels, and expected to create more than 70 new positions.
