Green hydrogen supply

Landfill gas utilisation for hydrogen projects refers to using gas generated by decomposing waste—primarily methane and carbon dioxide—as an energy input to produce low-carbon hydrogen, either by generating renewable electricity to power electrolysers or by reforming the gas directly.[1] In the South Coast/Dorset green hydrogen hub, the plant is described as landfill gas and solar-powered, meaning that gas collected from the landfill is converted into electricity which, together with solar PV, drives hydrogen production, thereby turning a waste by-product into a decarbonisation resource.[1][7]

Green hydrogen production refers to generating hydrogen by splitting water using electricity derived from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, or hydro, resulting in minimal direct greenhouse gas emissions.[10] In the Barrow project, approximately 100 GWh of hydrogen per year will be produced using renewable electricity contracted under long-term power agreements, qualifying the hydrogen as green and contributing to the decarbonization of Kimberly-Clark’s industrial operations.[3][4]
