The core technology in the Lugo prototype is a hydrogen fuel cell that powers an electric drivetrain at about 48 V, turning chemical energy from hydrogen into electricity for vehicle propulsion without direct tailpipe CO2 emissions.[2][10] Fuel‑cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) typically use compressed hydrogen stored in onboard tanks and a stack of fuel cells that produce electricity continuously while hydrogen and oxygen are supplied, emitting mainly water vapour as exhaust.[10]

The Lugo project is framed within broader initiatives in Galicia and Spain to promote green hydrogen—produced from renewable electricity—as a clean fuel for mobility, which is also reflected in prior FP projects like the hydrogen‑powered Bugatti replica built at the same center.[3] Regional initiatives such as "Hydrogen to FP" and Galician FP‑hydrogen agreements aim to connect vocational training centers with green hydrogen value chains, highlighting applications in vehicles, mobile power units and emergency or field operations.

Lugo (Galicia)

A full‑scale replica of the Bugatti Type 35 race car built by students at CIFP As Mercedes and powered by green hydrogen, intended to demonstrate hydrogen’s potential as a clean fuel for mobility and even stationary power.

An innovation project in vocational training in which teachers and students at CIFP As Mercedes designed, assembled and tested a small hydrogen‑powered car operating around 48 V with a fuel cell, created for didactic use and supported by the Xunta de Galicia.
