Canary Islands’ Green Hydrogen Initiative: A Model for the World
September 20, 2024How Fuerteventura’s Hydrogen Vision is Changing the Energy Game
In a bold move toward energy autonomy and sustainability, the Canary Islands are setting a precedent for isolated regions worldwide through the adoption of green hydrogen fuel. The island of Fuerteventura, in particular, is spearheading this initiative with the support of IR Maxoinversiones, a company that has been pivotal in the region’s fuel transport and distribution sector since 2007.
IR Maxoinversiones is expanding its renewable energy portfolio with a strong emphasis on green hydrogen. The company is poised to revolutionize mobility on Fuerteventura by distributing biofuels and green hydrogen through a network of public hydrogen filling stations across the island. This initiative marks a significant step toward reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
At the heart of this project is H-TEC SYSTEMS, a leading provider of PEM electrolysis technologies. They will supply a 1-megawatt PEM electrolyzer ME450, which will be crucial in the production of green hydrogen. This technology not only supports the decarbonization of mobility but also harnesses the abundant solar and wind potential available on the islands.
The Future of Green Hydrogen for vehicles on Fuerteventura
Set to commence in the summer of 2025, IR Maxoinversiones plans to start green hydrogen production in Puerto del Rosario using the H-TEC SYSTEMS ME450 electrolyzer. This cutting-edge piece of technology boasts the capacity to produce 450 kilograms of high-purity hydrogen daily—an essential development for fuel cell vehicles and power-to-X applications.
The hydrogen will be sold at public filling stations operated by IR Maxoinversiones, ensuring accessibility for residents and visitors alike. To further integrate green hydrogen into everyday life, the company manages “H2GO RENT,” a car rental service offering electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

A Win for the Environment and Economy
Utilizing 100% renewable energy sources like wind and solar, the hydrogen production process is entirely emission-free. This approach not only aligns with global eco-friendly goals but also positions the Canary Islands as leaders in the clean energy transition.
Alexander Detke, Team Lead Sales ME EU at H-TEC SYSTEMS, emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “Our technology will contribute to energy autonomy and climate protection on Fuerteventura. The Canary Islands hold tremendous potential for renewable energy, and green hydrogen presents an excellent opportunity for decarbonization.”

A Blueprint for Isolated Regions
The Canary Islands’ initiative serves as a compelling model for other isolated regions aiming to achieve sustainability and autonomy. By leveraging local renewable resources and cutting-edge technology, they demonstrate how islands can mitigate dependence on fossil fuels and spearhead innovative energy solutions.
Through these efforts, the Canary Islands are not just setting an example but also paving the way for sustainable energy practices worldwide. With the anticipated success of this project, Fuerteventura is on track to becoming a beacon of green innovation and environmental stewardship in the years to come.
Benefits of Local Fuel Production for Islands
Transitioning to domestically produced fuels such as green hydrogen provides numerous advantages for islands, both economically and environmentally. By generating their own energy, islands can alleviate the substantial costs associated with importing fossil fuels. This shift not only reduces transportation expenses and import fees but also enhances the economic resilience of island communities by keeping energy expenditures within the local economy. Significantly, producing fuel locally diminishes reliance on global fuel markets, shielding islands from volatile price fluctuations and ensuring a more stable energy landscape.
Environmentally, the local production of green hydrogen is a game-changer. Utilizing renewable energy sources like wind and solar, the hydrogen produced is entirely emission-free, drastically reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional fuel sources. This sustainable approach not only aligns with global efforts to combat climate change but also enhances the natural beauty and biodiversity of islands by minimizing pollution and environmental degradation. Collectively, these benefits underscore the transformative potential of local fuel production, enabling islands to embody self-sufficiency while championing a cleaner, greener future.
The Canary Islands story was excellent. There are a host of remote islands around the world that will benefit from the model set forth on Fuerteventura. Thanks.
Green Hydrogen production is exciting! The sources of electricity will improve. Even a retiring nuclear reactor could be dedicated to the task since it would not require maximum production. Thank you for doing this. The technology most likely will change the world.
It is not clear as to who is bearing the capital expenditure? What is the business model?
Thank you so much for your question! IR Maxoinversiones is taking a leading role in funding Fuerteventura’s hydrogen initiative, primarily shouldering the capital expenditure. As part of their strategy to expand their renewable energy portfolio, they have opted for the H-TEC SYSTEMS ME450 electrolyzer for this project. Hope this helps.
To follow on Dr. Patra’s question. Does Fuerteventura have the green electricity to support a 1MW electrolyzer or is building that capacity also a part of this project?
And, why hydrogen and not just electric battery cars on such a reasonably sized island?
