The green status of Cachimayo’s hydrogen hinges on electricity supplied under arrangements that certify the energy as renewable, implemented in partnership with Engie.[4][7] This approach relies on power purchase agreements (PPAs) and certification mechanisms that guarantee the origin of the electricity used for electrolysis and plant operations.

Hydrogen produced at the Cachimayo plant is used to synthesize ammonia, which then serves as the main feedstock for producing ammonium nitrate, a key component of ANFO (ammonium nitrate–fuel oil) explosives widely used in mining.[1][4] Enaex emphasizes that Cachimayo is the only plant in Peru producing ANFO-grade ammonium nitrate and that this ammonium nitrate is a fundamental input for the mining explosives supplied to its clients.[4][7]

Green hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar or wind, avoiding direct CO2 emissions from production.[6] In Tarragona, the plant will use electricity from dedicated photovoltaic installations operated under an off‑grid or autoconsumption scheme to power electrolyzers that produce hydrogen qualifying as renewable under EU rules.[1][6]
