The initiative is part of a new focus on sustainability coming from Macerich. The company adopted a more aggressive stance on sustainability in 2008 in an attempt to become more environmentally friendly. Macerich claims that it is looking to conduct business in a manner that is more socially responsible, hoping to mitigate its impact on the environment as much as possible and reduce the burden that its many shopping malls put on energy grids around the country.
