Chongqing: A Thriving Hub for Hydrogen Innovation

Step into Chongqing’s bustling streets, and you’ll spot more than just its dramatic skyline and old-school factories. This city, known for churning out millions of vehicles every year, is quietly reinventing itself in the name of sustainable mobility. Imagine a sleek, hydrogen fuel cell-powered sedan gliding along its winding highways without a drop of gasoline–that’s the future Chongqing is building today.

Scaling Hydrogen Mobility in China’s Automotive Heartland

Meet Deepal, the shiny new premium offshoot of state-owned Changan Automobile. They’ve just launched their first-gen hydrogen fuel cell system in the Deepal SL03 sedan, promising over 700 kilometers of CLTC range and refuel times as quick as your usual gas stop. Even more exciting? It’s one of the first passenger-focused hydrogen vehicles rolling out of a Chinese automaker, not just buses and commercial fleets.

Performance That Pushes the Benchmark

According to Yu Cheng, Deepal’s Global Product Development chief, their inaugural stack beats industry standards by more than 10% in key metrics. We’re still waiting on third-party validation, but in-house tests hint they’re closing in on heavyweights like Toyota and Hyundai when it comes to power density and efficiency.

From Prototype to Production: Commercialization Journey

This month, Chongqing’s production line rolled out its first batch of SL03 hydrogen sedans equipped with Deepal’s proprietary fuel cell units. In March alone, Changan Automobile moved 31,742 vehicles—a 69.4% year-on-year jump. Only 628 were hydrogen but that small number is already teaching the brand plenty, as early adopters rave about seamless drives and pit-stop refuels at an expanding station network.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Here’s the reality check: hydrogen passenger cars are still finding their footing. Analysts estimate China’s fuel cell lineup at around 30,000 units, with about 70% of core parts sourced locally. Patchy infrastructure and the higher price tag of stacks and high-pressure tanks are slowing uptake. Deepal’s already plotting a second-gen system for 2027, aiming to trim costs and close the price gap with battery-electric rivals.

A Collaborative Network Fueling Growth

This effort isn’t happening in isolation. Changan Automobile has teamed up with tech giants like Huawei and CATL to polish vehicle electronics and energy storage. And the Deepal SL03 hydrogen sedan is already playing ambassador at expos from Singapore’s motor show to Thailand’s auto fair, spreading the word that China’s crafting a full-fledged low-carbon brand, not just cars.

Leading the Charge Toward a Hydrogen Future

With Deepal in the driver’s seat, Changan Automobile is steering hydrogen vehicles into China’s broader clean-energy roadmap. This isn’t just about swapping batteries for cells—it’s a vision of a mixed transport ecosystem where hydrogen and electric power tag team. As prices come down and refueling networks expand, the SL03 hydrogen sedan could be a genuine game-changer for drivers craving long range, quick fill-ups, and zero local emissions.
