Adani Launches Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks for Coal Transport in Chhattisgarh

Adani Enterprises has just taken a big leap forward in clean energy by rolling out India’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck for coal transport. This isn’t just a test run—it’s the real deal, with operations kicking off on May 10, 2025, in Chhattisgarh. The new 40-ton beast is powered by a PEM fuel cell stack built by Adani New Industries Ltd (ANIL) and marks a bold step toward industrial decarbonization while tying directly into India’s ambitious National Hydrogen Mission.

A cleaner way to move heavy loads

This truck isn’t just about cutting-edge tech—it brings real-world benefits. With a driving range of around 200 km and the capacity to haul up to 40 tonnes per trip, it’s built for business. Thanks to its smart fleet management systems, the whole operation runs more efficiently. On the emissions front, Adani’s new truck fleet is estimated to slash CO2 emissions by 12,000 tonnes annually. And it’s quieter too—up to 60% less noise compared to traditional diesel trucks, making it a win for both the planet and the people working around them.

A bigger picture for a greener future

This launch is more than a standalone move—it fits into a broader strategy to clean up Adani’s mining supply chain. Alongside this hydrogen milestone, the company has already been piloting LNG trucks and even introduced Asia’s first semi-autonomous dozers. While coal remains a part of the current energy mix, Adani is making it clear they’re gearing up for a shift toward green hydrogen. Their roadmap includes a whopping 45 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2029, helping lay the foundation for large-scale hydrogen production and a more robust zero-emission technology ecosystem.
