Australia Launches First Hydrogen Refueling Station for Trucks in Geelong, Powered by Green Hydrogen
June 16, 2025Viva Energy has officially fired up Australia’s first public hydrogen refueling station for commercial vehicles, right in Geelong, Victoria. The station opened its pumps on June 13, 2025, marking a big moment for the future of clean transport in the country.
Green hydrogen on tap, made right on site
This isn’t your average fuel stop. The $61.2 million site features a powerful 2.5MW electrolyser that cranks out green hydrogen, made from nothing but recycled water and renewable electricity. It’s all part of a bigger push to build up Australia’s hydrogen infrastructure and support the shift to zero-emission technology.
Fueling the future — fast
Designed with busy fleet operators in mind, the station can refuel up to 10 hydrogen-powered trucks, buses, or garbage vehicles in under two hours. And it’s not just about hydrogen — EV fast chargers are built in too, so electric fleets can plug in and power up just as easily.
Backed by serious investment
The project got a major boost thanks to strong government backing, with $34 million in support from the Australian Federal Government and another $1 million from the Victorian Government. That kind of investment shows how serious Australia is about cutting emissions in heavy transport.
More than just a fuel stop
Located right off a key transport corridor, the Geelong site is perfectly placed to serve a wide range of commercial fleets across the region. And this is just the beginning — future upgrades may bring in renewable diesel options too, making it a true one-stop-shop for sustainable commercial transport.
All in all, Viva Energy’s new station isn’t just a first — it’s a glimpse of where things are headed. A scalable, multi-energy transport hub like this could set the tone for hydrogen and zero-emission technology rollouts right across Australia.
