E.ON and MM Neuss Unveil Europe’s First Hydrogen-Ready, Fully Automated CHP Plant
July 3, 2025E.ON SE has teamed up with MM Neuss to launch a groundbreaking energy project in Neuss, Germany: Europe’s first fully automated, hydrogen-ready CHP (combined heat and power) plant. This isn’t just any power plant—it’s paving the way for a cleaner, smarter energy future.
Next-generation energy, today
At the heart of the setup is a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) system that currently runs on natural gas blended with up to 10% hydrogen. And here’s the exciting part: it’s fully prepped to switch entirely to hydrogen in the future. That means it’s not just built for today—it’s ready for tomorrow’s clean energy landscape.
Smarter, more efficient, and fully automated
The entire plant is powered by E.ON IQ Energy®, advanced software that lets the facility run unattended for up to 72 hours. The system continuously analyzes real-time market trends and operating conditions, fine-tuning both power and heat output to maximize efficiency. It’s all about smart, hands-free energy generation that adapts on the fly.
Clean energy with a real impact
By leveraging this innovative design, the plant is expected to cut carbon emissions by up to 22,000 tonnes a year. That’s not just a statistic—it’s a big win for industrial decarbonization. Plus, this model is scalable, offering a practical blueprint for other industries looking to move towards cleaner operations.
Built where it matters
Strategically located at MM Neuss’s cartonboard production site in North Rhine-Westphalia, the plant is perfectly positioned to make a direct impact. It doesn’t just support the site’s energy needs—it’s also a bold step forward in expanding hydrogen infrastructure across Europe, aligning seamlessly with the EU’s ambitious clean energy goals.
This project isn’t just about power generation—it’s about reimagining how industries can lead the way in building a sustainable future with technologies like hydrogen-ready CHP and E.ON IQ Energy.
