Enagás Flags Delays in Cross-Border Hydrogen Infrastructure Amid Regulatory and Investment Roadblocks

Enagás S.A. is sounding the alarm on some serious delays—up to three years, in fact—in rolling out Europe’s hydrogen infrastructure across borders. The main roadblocks? A mix of unclear regulations, limited market demand, and not-so-appealing returns for investors. Even so, CEO Arturo Gonzalo Aizpiri is standing firm on the idea that Spain’s own hydrogen network is still on track to hit its 2030 deadline.

Spain Stays the Course While Europe Stalls

The EU’s plan to build a hydrogen corridor is central to achieving its climate goals and pushing industrial decarbonization forward. But Enagás is worried that unless regulators step up and offer more balanced risk-sharing and tangible incentives, the whole thing could veer off course and miss those all-important 2030 targets.

Still, while much of Europe is caught in red tape and investment hesitancy, Spain is pushing ahead with confidence. The country is positioning itself as a key player in the future of green hydrogen, thanks to its strong renewable energy backbone and solid infrastructure. If all goes according to plan, Spain could very well become the heart of Europe’s sustainable energy shift.
