Greece, Open call for a €7.87M Green Hydrogen CHP Pilot in Western Macedonia to Power Post-Coal Transition
July 7, 2025Greece’s Ministry of Economy and Finance is putting real money behind the clean energy movement with a fresh €7.87 million funding call. The goal? A first-of-its-kind green hydrogen-powered Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in Western Macedonia. Once up and running, this pilot project will pump out round-the-clock clean heat and electricity for public buildings and local institutions in Ptolemaida. It’s all part of the bigger picture laid out in the EU-supported Just Development Transition Programme, which is backing Greece’s push to cut carbon and breathe new life into regions facing a post-coal reality.
PPC’s Bold Bet on a Greener Western Macedonia
Right alongside that pilot plant, the PPC Group is rolling out a massive €5.75 billion investment plan to reshape Western Macedonia’s energy landscape. This sweeping initiative brings together solar PV systems, battery storage solutions, and new data infrastructure, all designed to fuel the region’s shift toward sustainable energy.
Homegrown Hydrogen Power with Hellenic Hydrogen
Supporting this energy reboot is Hellenic Hydrogen, a joint project by PPC and Motor Oil. They’re kicking things off with a 100 MW electrolyzer facility in Amyndeon—a key step in ramping up local green hydrogen production. With all these moving pieces coming together, Western Macedonia isn’t just trying to keep up with Europe’s hydrogen transition—it’s aiming to lead the charge.
