Hydrogen EV Charging Kicks Off at Hong Kong Science Park in Energy Sector First

July 28, 2025 0 By Angie Bergenson

On July 25, 2025, Towngas teamed up with HKSTP to kick off a project that could reshape the city’s clean energy future—the construction of Hong Kong’s first public hydrogen-powered EV charging station right inside the Hong Kong Science Park.

Clean Power, Straight from the Source

This isn’t your average EV charging setup. What makes it special? The electricity comes from fuel cells running on ultra-high purity hydrogen (99.97%), pulled directly from Towngas’s existing gas network. No storage tanks, no long-distance transportation—just clean, efficient energy made on-site. It’s enough to keep five automated EV charging posts humming along, delivering power without pumping out a single molecule of CO₂.

A Bold First Step in a Bigger Green Push

Backed by the HKSAR Environment and Ecology Bureau, this highly visible pilot is just one of 27 hydrogen-focused projects recently greenlit. The goal? To prove that hydrogen EV charging can be more than a concept—it’s a real, working solution ready to scale. Sure, the upfront costs are still high, but the broader vision is about building trust in green hydrogen as a low-emission alternative while pushing Hong Kong closer to its 2050 carbon neutrality targets.

Setting the Stage for What’s Next

At its core, this station isn’t just about charging vehicles—it’s about signaling a shift. A shift toward smarter energy use, infrastructure that’s future-ready, and turning visionary goals into tangible, on-the-ground progress. If successful, it could be the spark that lights up a new era of low-carbon infrastructure across the city—and beyond.
