Hydrogen Fuel Cells Take the High Road: NTPC Launches India’s First Commercial Hydrogen Bus Fleet in Ladakh
June 18, 2025NTPC Limited has taken a major step toward a clean, sustainable future by handing over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to SIDCO Ladakh, right at the Green Hydrogen Mobility Station in Leh. With that, India’s first commercial hydrogen-powered bus fleet officially hit the road—and it’s also the highest-altitude deployment of fuel cell technology anywhere in the world. Now that’s what you call making history.
Driving Clean at the Top of the World
These aren’t your average buses. They’re powered by green hydrogen, which is produced using solar-powered electrolysis. That means the only “emission” coming out of their tailpipes is water vapor—forget the clouds of smoke. And the impact goes beyond clean air: these buses are expected to slash carbon dioxide emissions by a solid 350 metric tons per year.
A Full Hydrogen Ecosystem—Built From the Ground Up
To make this all work seamlessly, Amara Raja Group took on the job of building a complete hydrogen infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art refueling setup. It’s all part of a bigger picture—supporting India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and showing the world how sustainable energy solutions can thrive, even in the harshest environments.
More Than Buses—A Vision for the Future
With backing from MoHUA, this isn’t just a transport project; it’s a bold leap involving eco-tourism, cleaner air, and improved energy security in remote areas. NTPC’s Ladakh pilot is more than a local experiment—it’s a clear message to the world: when it comes to green hydrogen and zero-emission mobility, India’s not just participating in the race—it’s leading the charge.
