HYScale Project Demonstrates PFAS-Free Electrolysers for Scalable Green Hydrogen Production

July 2, 2025 0 By Erin Kilgore

HYScale, an EU-backed initiative, has taken a major step forward in the world of green hydrogen by rolling out a 100 kW PFAS-free electrolyser that also ditches critical raw materials. Developed in collaboration with CENmat, Bekaert, DLR, and CNR, this system not only supports the EU’s climate ambitions, but also hits an important milestone—delivering a €400/kW capital cost target.

Breakthrough tech at the core

At the center of it all is CENmat’s AionFLX™ membrane platform—a fully recyclable, bio-based solution that’s already proving it can go the distance, even in low concentrations of KOH. What makes it even more impressive? It’s durable, sustainable, and fits seamlessly into future manufacturing pipelines.

On top of that, Bekaert is bringing it together with nickel-reduced porous transport layers, while DLR supplies the stack assembly tech that’s ready to scale. The overall system boasts an industrial-friendly design—free of complicated flow fields—and delivers over 2 A/cm² current density. Translation: this isn’t just theoretical. This kind of AEM water electrolysis is practical, scalable, and here to stay.

What this means for Europe

The HYScale project sets the stage for more than just cleaner hydrogen. It’s a direct hit on several big challenges—like cutting PFAS pollution, reducing dependence on imported critical materials, and helping decarbonize industries that are tough to clean up. Even though validation at the multi-megawatt level is still ahead, the roadmap is clear: affordable, sustainable hydrogen production is within reach, and Europe is in pole position to drive the next generation of electrolysis innovation.
