MT Group to Deliver Lithuania’s First Green Hydrogen Transit Hub in Vilnius
May 7, 2025MT Group is set to launch Lithuania’s very first green hydrogen transit hub right in the heart of Vilnius. With €10 million in funding—thanks in part to support from the EU—this exciting project is breaking ground in 2025 and looking to be fully up and running by mid-2026. At the core of the site? A powerful 3-MW PEM electrolyzer that’ll generate ultra-clean hydrogen to fuel a fleet of 16 zero-emission fuel cell buses.
Cutting Carbon and Kicking Diesel
Backed by the Vilnius City Municipality, the goal is clear: reduce CO₂ emissions by a solid 1,414 tons per year and phase out roughly 1,200 tons of imported diesel. It’s a bold move—and a big step toward making public transport cleaner, greener and much more energy-efficient.
A First in Central Europe
This makes Vilnius the first city in Central Europe to adopt hydrogen-powered public transport on this scale. It also fits snugly into Lithuania’s broader game plan—the €240 million National Hydrogen Strategy—and lines up with the EU’s 2030 hydrogen target. On top of building the hub, MT Group will be managing the full EPC scope, including the all-important refueling infrastructure.
Paving the Way for a Hydrogen Future
But the vision goes beyond Vilnius. By 2027, the new transit hub will link up with a hydrogen station in Klaipėda port, laying the groundwork for what’s shaping up to be a full-blown Baltic hydrogen corridor. It’s more than just a project—it’s a massive step toward cleaner cities, cutting-edge fuel cell technology, and a more sustainable energy future driven by homegrown green hydrogen.
