Sarawak Advances Green Hydrogen Production with Siemens Energy Partnership

Sarawak is making bold moves in the world of green hydrogen, teaming up with Siemens Energy to seriously ramp up the efficiency of hydrogen production. The goal? Cut down energy use from 30 kWh per kilogram—a figure that already leads the industry—to just 10 kWh/kg. This ambitious target was announced during the ASEAN Women Economic Summit in May 2025 and hinges on cutting-edge proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis technology.

From 60 to 10: Slashing Hydrogen Production Energy

This isn’t Sarawak’s first rodeo. They’ve already made waves by partnering with PETRONAS Research and a Japanese firm, cutting energy consumption in hydrogen production from a hefty 60 kWh/kg down to 30 kWh/kg. Now, the next big step aims to slice it even further—which could drop the cost of green hydrogen to under $2 per kilogram.

If they hit this mark, it won’t just save money—it could help slash carbon emissions in the ASEAN shipping industry by as much as 15 million tonnes a year. Thanks to Sarawak’s strong hydropower capacity, the region has a golden opportunity to become Southeast Asia’s hub for sustainable energy and industrial decarbonization.

Building on Real Momentum

This project is more than a one-off—it’s a key piece of a much bigger puzzle. It lines up perfectly with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and adds momentum to Sarawak’s existing green energy milestones. Just look at the hydrogen-powered transit system that rolled out in 2022 or the launch of Southeast Asia’s first integrated hydrogen production facility in Kuching in 2023.

Put simply, Sarawak isn’t just talking about a sustainable energy future—it’s building it. With partnerships, proven results, and a clear vision, the region is on track to be a major force in the global push for hydrogen-powered decarbonization.
