Sumitomo Backs Decentralized Hydrogen Push in US with Independence Hydrogen Investment

July 11, 2025 0 By Jake Banks

Independence Hydrogen, a U.S.-based company focused on reclaiming hydrogen that would otherwise be wasted during chemical production, just announced a new strategic partnership with Sumitomo Corporation of Americas. The deal, revealed on July 10, 2025, marks a big step forward in boosting decentralized hydrogen production for use across industrial, transportation, and energy sectors.

Turning Waste Into Clean Energy

Based in Petersburg, Pennsylvania, Independence Hydrogen is already refining around 1.2 tonnes of hydrogen per day from the excess gases released during chlor-alkali manufacturing. With Sumitomo now in their corner, the plan is to ramp that up to 7 tonnes per day—and expand distribution to reach more regions. The idea is simple but powerful: take hydrogen that would otherwise go to waste and transform it into a local energy resource. Not only does this cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, it also makes the whole supply chain more efficient and cost-effective.

A Shared Vision for Clean Hydrogen Growth

This collaboration fits squarely into Sumitomo’s broader strategy for global clean energy. The company is prioritizing investments in scalable hydrogen infrastructure, and this move tackles some of the biggest roadblocks in the field—like inconsistent supply, high costs, and the difficulty of getting hydrogen to where it’s actually needed. For Independence Hydrogen, the partnership means more resources to grow; for Sumitomo, it’s a chance to plant deeper roots in the U.S. hydrogen production market.

Pushing the Boundaries of Industrial Decarbonization

The deal reflects a growing trend: serious momentum behind fuel cell technology and the ongoing push for industrial decarbonization. As more companies look for smarter, cleaner ways to power operations, solutions like local hydrogen recovery are gaining traction fast. By combining Independence Hydrogen’s on-the-ground expertise with Sumitomo’s global reach, the partnership is well-positioned to help lead the charge toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
