Tasmania Backs Bell Bay as Green Hydrogen Hub with $70M Investment

June 9, 2025 0 By Alicia Moore

The Tasmanian Government picked the Bell Bay Powerfuels Project by Abel Energy to take the lead in creating the state’s very first large-scale green hydrogen hub. It’s all happening in the heart of the Bell Bay industrial zone in northern Tasmania—a spot that’s quickly shaping up to be a key player in Australia’s clean energy game.

A Major Step Toward Net-Zero—Right in Bell Bay

This ambitious project is set to deliver big: expect up to 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and a massive 300,000 tonnes of green methanol every year once it’s fully up and running. It’s not just about producing fuel—it’s about reshaping the future of industrial decarbonization for both local use and export around the world.

Backed by Big Players—and Big Dollars

With $70 million in federal funding on the table and major partners like Iberdrola Australia and TasPorts in the mix, the project is hitting the ground running. It’s expected to inject around $1.2 billion into the economy and create over 740 new jobs, bringing not just energy, but opportunity, to the region.

Clean Tech in Action: Electrolysis, Biomass, and CO₂ Capture

So how’s it going to work? It’s all about cutting-edge clean tech. The facility will tap into advanced electrolysis, biomass gasification, and CO₂ capture to create zero-emissions fuel—turning Tasmania into a powerhouse for sustainable hydrogen production.

What’s Next?

Mark your calendars—2028 is when production is scheduled to kick off. And when it does, Bell Bay’s transformation into a major green energy hub will be well underway, pushing the envelope for clean fuels like green methanol and helping pave the way to a low-carbon future.
