TÜV SÜD Launches Hydrogen Safety Certifications to Accelerate Global Hydrogen Infrastructure

May 20, 2025 0 By Allen Brown

TÜV SÜD, the global certification powerhouse out of Germany, just rolled out a fresh set of hydrogen safety certification programs at this year’s World Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Rotterdam—and they’re making some serious waves in the industry.

New Certifications for a Safer Hydrogen Future

The new lineup covers some major bases. There’s a dedicated H2-Readiness Certification focused on testing infrastructure materials, a Fuel Cell Systems Certification based on IEC 62282 standards, and a thorough Electrolyzer Certification aligned with ISO 22734 guidelines. These aren’t just box-checking exercises—they’re designed to tackle real-world safety and compliance issues that have been holding things up in the hydrogen infrastructure space.

Pushing Performance Limits

What’s especially impressive is TÜV SÜD’s ability to run serious stress tests. At their lab in Garching, they can simulate extreme conditions with high-pressure testing up to 1,000 bar. That kind of testing is crucial, because it proves that systems can handle the pressure—literally and figuratively. Everything from fuel cell technology to electrolysis gets the scrutiny needed to ensure leak-proof, durable, and above all, safe operation.

Boosting Confidence for Faster Rollout

The goal here is clear: speed things up. By delivering trusted, globally recognized certifications, TÜV SÜD is giving both regulators and investors the green light to move forward faster. Whether it’s rail networks, aviation systems, energy storage on power grids, or cleaner processes in heavy industries, having these certifications in place means one less roadblock on the path to wide-scale industrial decarbonization.

A Decade of Hydrogen Expertise

This isn’t TÜV SÜD’s first rodeo when it comes to hydrogen. They’ve been in the game since 2010, and this latest push only strengthens their position as a key player in Europe’s big push toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. With these new certifications, they’re not just keeping up—they’re helping lead the charge.
