Xodus Secures Western Australia Site for Major Green Hydrogen Project
May 26, 2025Xodus, a global energy consultancy, has just landed a massive 16,000-hectare site in Western Australia’s Oakajee Strategic Industrial Area, and they’ve got big plans for it. The goal? To roll out a major green hydrogen and ammonia production hub. Backed by the Government of Western Australia, this project will unfold in two phases, each with a clear focus.
A two-phase approach with big ambitions
In the first phase, the project will focus on local hydrogen production, targeting sectors like heavy transport and mining — industries that are ripe for industrial decarbonization. Then, once things are up and running, phase two will kick in, shifting gears to start converting hydrogen into ammonia for export. The main markets? Japan and South Korea, both of which are pushing hard toward cleaner energy solutions.
Old site, new purpose
Oakajee was originally set up for iron ore exports, but now it’s being reimagined as a launchpad for Australia’s green energy future. And thanks to some existing infrastructure, it’s an ideal spot for exporting green hydrogen. Right now, Xodus is in talks about renewable power sources, and all signs point to the Warradarge Wind Farm as the key supplier to power the electrolysis process — the tech that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy.
A strategic move on the global hydrogen stage
This project isn’t just about one facility — it fits neatly into Australia’s broader National Hydrogen Strategy. The idea is to position Australia as a top global player in green hydrogen, and according to industry insiders, efforts like this are crucial. They see it as a sweet spot between small-scale pilot projects and massive gigawatt-scale rollouts. In short, it’s a real-world blueprint for scalable, export-ready hydrogen production.
