Clean hydrogen fuel can be generated without the use of electricity

Only recycled aluminum scrap and water are needed to produce hydrogen fuel.

Through the simple orchestration of a series of chemical reactions, a newly-launched startup, Trolysis, is able to split the molecules or ordinary water to produce 100% renewable and clean hydrogen fuel.

Trolysis involves a 4-step process.

The company generates clean hydrogen fuel through a process that allows them to conduct electrolysis of water. Electrolysis is a chemical decomposition that takes place by passing an electric current through an electrolyte.

The entire process is carried out though four basic steps, starting with the input of aluminum. During this step, the system strips the aluminum of a thin natural coating. This coating is necessary for everyday use aluminum items as it is what prevents aluminum from reacting with liquids.

Once the aluminum barrier is stripped, step two is to introduce the aluminum to the water, resulting in a chemical reaction that splits the water into separate water and oxygen molecules.

Step three is when hydrogen from the reaction is collected and fed through a fuel cell, transforming it into electricity. Finally, once the reaction is complete, the barrier that was initially stripped of the aluminum is filtered out and recycled back into pure aluminum or it can be easily disposed.

The Trolysis system produces clean hydrogen with no carbon pollution.

Although hydrogen fuel is a green and renewable form of alternative power, the same can’t always be said for the production process used to create this fuel. In fact, currently, the leading hydrogen fuel production method is steam-methane reformation. This process is not only costly but it is also damaging to the environment.

Trolysis has worked on overcoming these issues by inventing a sustainable and eco-friendly solution that allows for the production of on-demand hydrogen for everyday use. This is accomplished by taking advantage of a widely unused chemical element – aluminum.

“For the longest time, the only economical way of producing hydrogen for mass consumption was to pry it out of fossil fuels,” says Tirthak Saha, Trolysis co-founder and CEO, reported Forbes.

“What we’re doing is reclaiming the wasted side of aluminum and putting it back into the economy,” Saha added.

If applied for large scale commercial use, Saha believes that industrial clean hydrogen fuel like Torlysis’, can decrease the level of CO2 emissions and reduce the onslaught of climate change.
